O’Neal is in business with Town chairman Kelvin Thomas, who owns the Florida-based Shaq-Fu radio station that the star developed, and ahead of Town’s crucial match at Oxford United on Tuesday he has sent a video message to Thomas, Chris Wilder and the players.

The 43-year-old has been keeping a close eye on the Cobblers’ progress since his friend Thomas took over, and he told the players on the club’s YouTube channel ‘officiallyntfc’ ‘it’s great to see you guys at the top’.

O’Neal goes on to offer some end-of-season advice, and the former Orlando Magic, LA Lakers and Miami Heat star, who was part of four NBA Championship winning teams before his retirement from playing in 2011, says he is looking forward to crossing the pond to come to Northampton and watch the Cobblers in action for himself.

“I just wanted to wish Kelvin and all the Cobblers the best of luck for the rest of the season,” said O’Neal in the 30-second video message.

“First place is where I like to be, and it’s great to see you guys at the top.

“I know what it takes to win championships, so you got to make sure you finish strong, and do not give up that intensity.

“I am looking forward to coming to Sixfields at some point to see a match, and you guys know what you need to do.

“Keep grinding guys, I know you are going to be the champs.”
