Manager Page the key as Revell snubs Blades and MK to sign for Cobblers

It is understood the Dons and the Blades were very keen on signing Revell, along with other Sky Bet League One clubs, but the 32-year-old says once he knew Northampton were interested in him, he wasn’t going anywhere else.

The Chron understands that more money was offered to Revell by other clubs, and that Sheffield United were still trying to persuade him to move to south Yorkshire as late as Tuesday morning.

But Revell wasn’t interested and instead says he ‘wants to get down to business’ at Northampton with his ‘talented’ new team-mates and manager Page.

“There has been interest from other clubs, but the manager was the one of the main reasons I have signed here,” said Revell, who grew up in Cambridge.

“When I met him I got on great with him.

“To be honest, he didn’t need to sell the club to me but his drive and what he wants to do here was a big aspect of why I wanted to sign.

“When I joined Rotherham it had a similar feeling to this, and some momentum.

“The manager there was someone who believed that the club could go places. I got the same feeling when meeting the manager here and I want to be a part of that again.”

It’s fair to say Revell endured a tricky season last time round, playing for three clubs in Cardiff City, Wigan Athletic and finally Milton Keynes.

He managed six goals through the campaign, with four in 17 appearances at the end of the season for MK in the Championship, but he is looking forward to settling down and enjoying life at one club again.

“I have had a year of difficult times, but that has made me appreciate playing games, enjoying yourself, and being at a club that really appreciates what you do, I think that is the most important thing,” said Revell, who has scored 94 goals in a senior career spanning almost 500 appearances.

“That is why I am here, and I want to get down to business, and I want to get down to playing again.

“I want to add to what already is a very talented squad that took league two by storm last season. I want to part of it.”

Another attraction in joining Northampton is the style of football the team has been playing, and the amount of chances created for the front men.

“As a striker, it is what you dream of,” said Revell. “You would see Ricky Holmes on the telly every other week last season, and this year could be no different.

“The team has players that set up goals, there are goals everywhere in the squad.

“I looked on last year and I saw how well everybody was doing, and I don’t see that much difference between league two and league one now, as there are a big clubs in both leagues.

“Hopefully, I feel I can add to what is here and I know there is going to be competition which is what you want.

“It is a tough league and we need to take it from last year, carry on what happened last season, and be successful.”

Revell joins Marc Richards as a target man option in the Cobblers ranks.

And although Revell is looking forward to battling it out with the Town skipper for a starting role, he’s also hoping to get the chance to partner him in attack as well.

“I think Marc is excellent,” he said. “For me, there is no point joining a club if you’re the only person who is going to play up front.

“Realistically you have to be playing well to stay in the team, and that is the most important thing as a player, to have competition.

“With a player of Marc’s ability, it is a challenge for both of us and hopefully we can play together which would be nice, but we will see.

“I have to come in here and do what I know I can do, and hopefully that is enough for me and Marc to play together and to score some goals.”
