Daventry desperate to get back into action at Barton on Saturday

The Runnymede Stadium in Egham is situated very close to the River Thames, and the pitch was under four feet of standing water as a result.

The river Thames had flooded the changing rooms and the refurbished clubhouse.

The club reported on their website, that it could be late March before Daventry will be able to play their fixture at Egham.

Daventry Town Club Secretary Nigel Foster is struggling to rearrange the club’s postponed matches.

“We are hoping to get a league game started at Barton Rovers on Saturday, as they are one of the few clubs which has managed to get their home games completed on schedule,” said Foster.

“I am now having to fill in Thursday matches for the month of March.

“I have rearranged matches against Ashford, AFC Hayes, Egham and the big county derby for Thursday, March 13 at home to Kettering Town.

“These dates all have to be rubber stamped by the league

“Rearranging fixtures can be a problem, because if this bad weather continues, I have to try and rearrange the matches for a second or third time, if they are called off again.

“Both clubs have to agree a date within seven days of the game being called off; I don’t really have many options when I look at possible dates anymore, because we no longer have many free dates available to us.”

Daventry Town are so keen to get the team playing football again that they have added yet another fixture to their calendar!

The club played a ‘friendly’ match at Wellingborough Town on Wednesday night, Daventry boss Darran Foster arranged the match so that his players can get some ‘match time’ before the big game at promotion contenders Barton Rovers on Saturday.

Physiotherapist Jack Champelovier has left the club to pursue a full-time contract at Tresham College, and former Daventry Town Ladies Team Physio Martin Standish has agreed to join the club until the end of the season.

On Saturday, Daventry are scheduled to travel to promotion candidates Barton Rovers who are currently sixth in the table, two points ahead of Daventry, having played two more matches.

Daventry beat Rovers 3-1 in January, a Luke Keen hat trick, giving Town all three points in a very tough encounter.

Foster expects this match to be just as difficult.

“Rovers drew 1-1 with Beaconsfield and beat Dunstable Town by 2-0 in their past two matches,” said Foster.

“Barton will want to continue that good run of form at our expense.

“But if we play our game, I know we can get the result we want.”

Next Tuesday, Daventry travel to Potters Bar Town.

The Scholars have struggled this season, winning just seven games. They only lost 1-0 to Rugby Town recently, but on Tuesday were beaten 4-0 at Kettering.

Bar will still prove difficult opponents should the game go ahead.
