And manager Rob Page says he expects to fill the void left by Cresswell’s departure later this week.

Cresswell, who moved to Northampton from Fleetwood Town in 2014, made 67 appearances for Cobblers, scoring seven goals.

But the 28-year-old’s most recent appearance came back in January, against Barnet.

And Page said: “Obviously Ryan was part of the squad last year but maybe didn’t play as much as he would’ve liked in the second half of the season.

“We expect to be adding another central defender this week and therefore Ryan’s playing opportunities were going to be limited in this league one campaign.

“Ryan is a good lad and I wish him well.”
