Cobblers boss Page hoping for glamour tie in EFL Cup round three

Boss Rob Page is keeping his fingers crossed the Cobblers land a glamour tie against one of England's footballing giants in Wednesday night's EFL Cup third round draw.

Northampton booked their place in the third round of the competition with a well-deserved penalty shootout win over Premier League outfit West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday night.

The teams drew 2-2 after 90 minutes and extra-time at Sixfields, before the Cobblers clinched victory with a 4-3 spot-kicks victory.

Town now go into the hat along with the other round two winners, as well as the Premier League sides that have been exempt to now due to being involved in European competition.

That means Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Leicester City, Southampton and West Ham United enter the fray, joining the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool and Everton.

And Page hopes the Cobblers are rewarded for the efforts against the Baggies with big cup draw.

“It’d be lovely and a reward for the lads and the fans to get a nice big game,” said Page. “Let’s get a Chelsea or a Liverpool

“They deserve a nice tie because I thought the supporters were outstanding on Tuesday, and that does make a big difference when you’re on your knees and need that lift against a Premier League team.

“As a reward for the football club and the supporters, Manchester United away would be a good one.”

The draw is scheduled to take place on Wednesday evening, at the conclusion of the second round tie between Accrington Stanley and Burnley, which is being shown live on Sky Sports.

The third round is scheduled to played September 21 or 22.
