Cobblers boss Justin Edinburgh is targeting a Sixfields double as he sets his sights on league one safety '˜sooner rather than later'.

Town entertain fifth-from-bottm Oldham Athletic on Tuesday night (ko 7.45pm) before hosting mid-table Charlton Athletic on Saturday, and Edinburgh wants to make home advantage count as he aims to break the all-important 50-point barrier.

The Cobblers go into the clashes against the Athletics off the back of two tough away days at promotion-chasing Southend and Fleetwood, where they managed to claim just one point out of six.

And the Town boss is expecting more reward this week as he looks to widen the points gap between the Cobblers and the bottom four, which currently stands at six points.

“You always look at your results first and foremost, and then you look at others and it always seems to to and fro, and people are picking up points when you least expect it,” said Edinburgh, who has steered his team to 40 points, mainly on the back of three straight home victories against Coventry City, Chesterfield and Swindon Town.

“These two home games give us a real opportunity to try and increase that six-point margin and make it a really nice buffer.

“I think we know that 50 or 51 points makes you, not automatically safe, but you get to that number and I would think you would be.

“I would imagine in six of the past seven years that has been the case.

“So nothing has changed in our mindset. We are aware of what is below, but we are chasing that 50 points and the quicker we get to that, then it makes it a lot easier for us to go and enjoy playing in games.

“That is still our aim, and hopefully we can pick up some points in these next two home games that make that achievable sooner rather than later.”

The Cobblers will be without striker Alex Revell for Tuesday’s clash with Oldham, as he has been ruled out for a further three weeks due to a calf muscle problem.

Brendan Moloney and Luke Williams both returned to full training this week after suffering knee injuries, but the clash against John Sheridan’s team may be too soon for them to return.

Oldham come to Sixfields protecting a four-match unbeaten run, with their past two matches ending in 0-0 draws against Swindon and Millwall.
