DID Buckby expect to carry the fight all the way? Maybe not, but they also didn’t expect the bandwagon to be halted by lowly Yaxley.
Skipper Richard Bunting returned following a three-match suspension following his dismissal at Holbeach on New Year’s Eve.
The match started with all the usual pressure you would expect from an unbeaten team against opponents who were fighting relegation.
Time and again Buckby over elaborated in their approach, always trying to play the perfect ball in pursuit of the goal that would hopefully deflate their visitors.
All the forwards had the opportunity to make the visiting goalkeeper work harder than he really needed to.
But in the first-half the most he had to do was tip over a couple of shots – although Greg Ling did hit a post – when the keeper was out of position.
The second-half started as the first had finished but Yaxley showed their metal when following a defensive mistake, keeper Watts was forced into a fine save.
The writing was on the wall and Craig Kelly lost possession and Eugene Libertucci calmly chipped the stranded keeper to give the visitors the most unlikely scoreline of the afternoon.
Try as they might, the home team threw everything at the visitors but to no avail and wasted chance after chance.
The scenes at the end as the Yaxley players celebrated their win as if they had won the league, were in stark contrast to the home players. They meet again in 10 days.
