Boss Page pleased as the Cobblers find their shooting boots

After a sluggish start to the season in terms of scoring goals, Town have really started to find their shooting boots.

After netting just three goals in their opening five Sky Bet League One matches - one of them an own goal - the Cobblers have scored five in their past two.

They notched three in the win over Milton Keynes Dons and then saw off Walsall 2-0 at Sixfields last weekend, and the creativity his team is showing has pleased the Cobblers manager.

“I am seeing a progression in our attacking play week in, week out, and long may that continue,” said Page.

“We had to work hard for our three points against Walsall, and what we are doing now is we are playing to our strengths.

“When you have Alex Revell up top, and you have the experience and quality of Matt Taylor and Dave Buchanan, it speaks volumes about the players and character we have got.

“We are putting balls in the box and we are committing bodies forward, and that is helping us get the wins at the moment.”

The Cobblers travel to Chesterfield on Saturday protecting their record unbeaten league run of 31 games.

Page has named the same team for the past two weeks, with John-Joe O’Toole and Gaby Zakuani having to make do with places on the bench against the Saddlers after missing the Milton Keynes game through suspension and international duty respectively.

And Page has hinted that he may well go with the same team again for the trip to Proact Stadium.

“It makes your decision easier as a manager when you are winning games of football and you are on a good run,” said the Town manager.

“It means the team picks itself, but the players know that at any moment, with the quality we have sat on the bench, that if they take their foot off the gas there is a player there waiting to take their jersey.

“There is John-Joe O’Toole on the bench, Marc Richards has not had many minutes, and then you have Gaby Zakuani as well.

“To have somebody of Gabs’s quality waiting for his opportunity to come in, the starting 11 know they can’t take their foot off the gas.

“It is great to have that competition for places, and it’s why the standard is so high at the minute.”
