Davies delight as Gloucester prove too good for Saints

The Cherry and Whites conquered Franklin’s Gardens thanks to two tries from Jonny May and 17 points from the boot of Rob Cook.

It was a deserved victory for the away side who, in contrast to their hosts, kept their heads and took their chances.

And Davies was delighted with the display, which saw Gloucester leapfrog Saints in the Premiership standings.

“I’m very pleased with the overall performance,” he said. “We’d had a big week and on the back of the Amlin Challenge Cup games and the LV= Cup and we’d been refocusing.

“It was a tighter selection that we had in the previous four matches and the boys have done exactly what we asked them to do.

“Discipline was always going to be huge for us. In the past three games we’d given away 18 penalties, which is not good enough, and if you come here and do that you’re not going to get anything out of the game.

“We were very disciplined and very accurate in the contact areas as well, which maintains your discipline and allows you to be effective in that area.

“Defensively we were excellent and we gave Saints a real go in the end.”

And Davies was also understandably keen to heap praise on winger May, who used his speed to claim two crucial tries.

The Gloucester boss added: “Having Jonny May back makes the difference.

“He’s the type of player who, in a tight arm wrestle of a game, can change how it looks and that’s what he did.”
