The batsman tweaked a calf muscle before the start of the two-day friendly with Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge and will have a scan tomorrow (Friday).

It hasn’t been the best of fortnights for the County who already have David Willey and Ben Duckett out of action with back and knee problems respectively.

And the timing of Sales’ issue is the main concern for head coach David Ripley who said: “David won’t bat in this game and it’s definitely worrying.

“We don’t know if their is any damage but being so close to the start of the season it is a bit concerning.”

As for Willey, who had a scan on his back earlier this week and has yet to return to bowling in a full capacity, Ripley revealed that the club are waiting for the radiographer to compare the results with an earlier image.

He added: “The results from the latest one are fairly positive but until it’s checked against the last one then we won;t have the full picture.

“In isolation, this scan showed the problem to be three-quarters healed but we have to make sure that it wasn’t the same before which would indicate no real progress.

“So finger’s crossed we’ll have some good news.”
