At the County Ground, the hosts made 209-7 in their 38 overs but a first wicket partnership of 195 between Adam Lyth and Alex Lees ensured it would be two defeats on the trot for the Steelbacks.

Rossington, who top scored with 75 in the first innings, said: “All credit to them, they had two guys who played really well and got big scores but we didn;t set the right tone and the game got away from us.”

“They did play very well, they read the conditions well and got off to a good start.

“It’s always nice to score runs but obviously I’d have preferred to have come away with two points and it was a little bit disappointing overall.

“They bowled well up front and we might’ve been 10 or 15 light but I don’t think we were too far off the mark.”

Next up for the Steelbacks is a visit to the Ageas Bowl to face Hampshire on Friday for a contest that Rossington is confident of winning.

He added: “The games come thick and fast and hopefully we can bounce back on Friday.

“They’re (hampshire) a very good side, very organised in one-day cricket but we’ll go down there backing ourselves to win.

“We know what we need to do but we didn’t execute our skills with the ball and in the field, we’ll keep working hard on that and hopefully it will click on Friday night.”

As for his own situation, the Middlesex loanee, when questioned over whether his future could lie at Wantage Road, was non-committal.

“I’m really enjoying it, the loan’s been extended for another month and we’ll reassess it at the end of that month,” he said.
