The Australian seamer returned home last month after a succesful two-month stint in which he took 36 wickets at an average of 16 in the LV= County Championship.

It has always been the club’s stated aim to get Copeland back in the fold and a decision is expected quickly.

The deal would be for three Championship games only - Essex at Colchester, Glamorgan at home and Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl - and chief executive David Smith says that, despite the short length of the deal, the club feel it would be worth the effort.

He said: “Trent did such a good job for us and we’ve always said that we want him back and that he would be more than welcome.

“The three games will be key ones for us and for that reason we think it would be worthwhile.”
