Bowling duo the latest to succumb to injury

Olly Stone and Steven Crook have been ruled out of Northamptonshire Steelbacks’ Royal London Cup clash with Yorkshire at the County Ground tomorrow (Tuesday, 2pm).

The duo have picked up shin and hamstring injuries respectively and are the latest casualties on an injury list that has been rarely less than clogged up this season.

They join Rob Newton and Rob Keogh (both finger) on the sidelines and it means that the home side are picking from a threadbare squad for the visit of Andrew Gale’s men.

That means Andrew Hall and Stephen Peters will make their first competitive List A appearances of the season and head coach David Ripley is in no doubt they will do a good job.

He said: “Whenever we’ve needed Andrew in the white ball games he’s done a good job and that won’t change.

“He’s put his hand up in the meetings and said that he’ll take on the Lee Daggett role, bowling those overs in the middle of the innings, and that’s what we’ll be looking for him to do.

“Stephen has played a lot of List A cricket and started in the 40-over side last year before he got injured.

“He played well against New Zealand A, he brings a lot of experience and he’s a leader on the field.”

Peters will open the batting alongside Richard Levi with Kyle Coetzer, who will stay as captain despite Peters’ promotion, dropping to number three.

As for the visitors, who like the Steelbacks have won one and lost one of their two outings, Ripley thinks it could be an ideal time to have them as opposition.

He added: “They’re a strong side, as they normally are, but they’ve got a few away with England and the Lions so it could be a good time to face them.

“They’re still in the shake-up for the Championship so will have one eye on that but they’ve got a good squad.

“It’s important that we try to keep ourselves in the competition because further down the line, if sides are looking at the Championship, then it could be favourable for those facing them.”
