Burrell ready to be one of Saints’ leaders

After two miserable defeats in as many weeks, Saints need their leaders to stand up and be counted.

The likes of Dylan Hartley, Tom Wood, Phil Dowson and Calum Clark are among a group of senior players who will be expected to inspire those around them in the coming days.

But there’s another player, who, despite never having been assigned the role of skipper, is desperate to step up and provide wisdom for his team-mates.

And Luther Burrell says he will use the experience gained from playing in big games for England during the past couple of seasons to drive Saints to glory.

“For me now it’s about being a leader and bringing the experience I’ve got from being on international duty back to the club,” said the 27-year-old.

“I would like to think the lads respect me and listen to what I have to say and that comes from the experience you have as a rugby player.

“It’s about me being vocal and being a leader and when the team needs me to get on the front foot or make a big shot then I need them to have that trust in me.”

Burrell started all five of England’s Six Nations matches, helping them finish second behind champions Ireland on points difference.

He returned to Saints and was rested for the game against Wasps before starting in the defeats to Clermont and Exeter.

And the former Sale Sharks player is now aiming to produce some consistent performances in the final three matches of the regular season as Saints bid to secure top spot.

“The Six Nations was good, but there was disappointment there as well,” said Burrell, who now has 12 England caps.

“In terms of my own form, I got brought in to do a certain role and I think I did that.

“Now, being back at Northampton, it’s about consistency and slotting into our way.

“Hopefully I can help the boys to get on the front foot and get good results for the rest of the season.”
