THREE of Daventry Athletic Club’s young athletes have been selected to represent Northamptonshire Schools at the prestigious English Schools Track and Field Championships at Gateshead on July 1-2.
Niklas Aarre (William Parker), Sam Meyler (Guilsborough) and Kieran Russ (Danetre) are three of only 25 athletes between the ages of 13 and 18 selected for the Northants team.
The achievement is particularly notable as the 15-year-olds are all first year’s in the U17 (Intermediate) Boys’ age group.
On Saturday they competed for Northants Schools at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham, in the Mason Trophy against eight other counties and all finished a highly respectable fourth.
In the 100m hurdles Russ set a new club record of 14.4 sec. to secure his selection. The consistent Meyler recorded a distance of 6.29m in the long jump, just below his season’s best of 6.39m, and Aarre was only a little off his season’s best of 40.48m with a distance of 39.15m in the discus.
The club had two other athletes representing the county on Saturday.
Thirteen-year-old Connor Aldridge (William Parker) placed 7th/18 in the U15 (Junior) Boys’ 400m with a time 57.7 and Georgia Webster (Campion) finished 8th/18 in the U15 Girls’ 75m hurdles (12.5).
On Sunday Michael Fenn, 19, won a bronze medal in the Senior Men’s long jump at the Midland Championships with a distance of 6.88m.
