Workers move onto former cafe site

WORK has started on a piece of derelict land off the A45 near Daventry.

Machinery and workers arrived on the site of the old cafe and filling station, between Dodford and Weedon on the A45, at the end of last week.

On Monday roadworks and traffic lights appeared on the A45 neighbouring the land.

The site had planning permission granted in May 2009 for three blocks of offices with a condition that work started within three years.

The U-shaped blocks would provide 4,680 sq metres of office space, and there would be 146 car parking spaces, although the number of jobs that would be created is unknown.

If work had not begun by May this year, the planning approval would have lapsed.

Previously there were plans to build a 78-room hotel/motel and cafe on the site.

The land is known as the former ACE Cafe site but before the cafe opened in the 1950s or 60s, the transport cafe was known as the Trucker’s Hut.

The old buildings were demolished in 2005 after suffering from years of vandalism.

Metal fences went up around the site in 2006 as a security measure.
