WORK will start on a new University Technical College (UTC) for Daventry within a matter of weeks after planning permission was unanimously granted last week.

The decision by Daventry District Council’s Planning Committee on August 29 paves the way for preparatory work to start soon on the former pitch and putt site in Ashby Road.

The funding agreement for the Daventry UTC was also recently approved by Lord Hill, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Education.

The ministerial consent was critical to securing the revenue funding from Central Government to fund the scheme and follows several months of hard work by all partners to finalise the UTC’s business case, its design and development and curriculum.

Chris Moody, chair of UTC Board of Governors, said: “The approval of the funding agreement is a landmark decision and is testament to all the hard work of the various partners to get to this stage.

“We are delighted that the Daventry UTC also was granted planning permission which allows us to drive forward towards the scheduled opening in September 2013.”

The UTC will provide education in sustainable and related new technologies for up to 600 students aged from 14 to 19-years-old.

The Daventry UTC application has been spearheaded by Moulton College and its partners including DDC, the University of Northampton, Northamptonshire County Council, and West Northamptonshire Development Corporation, together with a range of local employers including Cummins, Cosworth and DHL.

Parents and carers of children that will be moving into Year 10 or 12 in September 2013 who would like express an interest in applying to the Daventry UTC can fill in a form online at
