A weekend of wheelchair basketball will be staged in Daventry at the start of March to give people a taste of the sport.

The Northamptonshire Phoenix Wheelchair Basketball Club will be running taster sessions open to anyone, of all abilities and with or without disabilities. They will also be holding a full competitive league match in the town as well.

The weekend takes place over March 1 and 2 at Daventry Leisure Centre, and it is hoped will lead to a wheelchair basketball club in the town.

On the Saturday (March 1) there will be taster sessions running from noon to 12.30pm.

A spokesman for the club said: “This event will provide people of all ages and abilities the chance to experience the speed, skill and thrill of one of the most inclusive sports available.

“The sports wheelchairs will be supplied and participants are asked to wear comfortable non-baggy clothing and not open toe footwear, or heels.”

Then on the following day, Sunday March 2, Northants Phoenix will be showcasing the sport at a competitive level when they play their regional league game against Hereward Heat at Daventry Leisure Centre.

The game tips off at 2pm and anyone can come along to cheer them on, free of charge.

Both of these events are being held in Daventry as the start of a development project by Northants Phoenix in partnership with Everyone Active, which manages Daventry Leisure Centre on behalf of Daventry District Council, to potentially start a satellite club in the Daventry area.

There’s no need to register for either event in advance, so just turn up on the day.
