Weedon and Flore had their community spirit recognised by judges in this year’s Northamptonshire Best Village Competition.

The results were announced at a formal presentation event held on Tuesday, July 15 in Hunsbury Hill Centre, Northampton. Competition winners were presented with cups and trophies by Annette and Paul Hollowell.

Weedon was second in the large village category, and third overall, while its neighbouring village of Flore came third in the small village category.

Helmdon, a village in South Northamptonshire, won the competition outright while the village of Stanwick in eastern Northamptonshire came second.

Sue Butler, chairmen of Weedon Parish Council, said: “Best Village Competition highlights just how much goes on in our village with so many community groups, events and a village hall with green credentials thanks to its newly-installed solar panels.”

She added: “It’s not all about flower boxes as some people may think. Thanks should go to Weedon Sports Association who offered to run with the application this year, Riverside Court for welcoming the judges with a cake and those people who came to meet the judges during a tour round the village.”

Cllr Butler said that Weedon plans to enter the competition next year and urged other villages in the area to do the same.

The competition, in which judges measure entrants’ appearance, sense of community and sustainability was saved from closure in 2010 by the sponsorship of Hollowell’s Funeral homes.

David Scudamore, chairman of the 2014 competition, said: “Our congratulations go to every village that entered the 2014 competition. We are pleased that successful villages bring the community together to decide on what to show the judges and how to manage the important judges’ visit to the village.

“Yet again the judges had great difficulty in deciding on the winning villages, reflecting the quality of Northamptonshire’s rural communities.”

He added: “We would like to thank every village for making the judges’ visits so informative and enjoyable.’’

The county co-ordinator, Barron Walton, said: “The village of Helmdon is a worthy winner of the Northamptonshire Best Village Competition. It is pleasing to see winning villages from across Northamptonshire and we hope to see more communities entering this high profile competition next year.”
