Warning to residents over council tax rebate scam

HOUSEHOLDS are being warned to avoid being duped by a new council tax scam.

This month Daventry District Council’s revenue and benefits team has been receiving calls from residents who have described being called by the ‘central rating department’ advising them they are entitled to a £7,000 rebate.

People are then asked to supply their bank details by 2pm on the day of the call to receive the cash.

DDC is warning people that this is a scam and that the council will never call customers to request their bank details.

Nick Stringfellow, DDC’s corporate manager for finance, said: “DDC refunds are either paid directly back to bank accounts if the relevant detail are held, or cheques are posted to customers.”

Other councils across Northamptonshire have also reported similar cases in the past week, which are similar to a scam carried out late last year.
