POLICE are warning people could fall foul of wildlife laws relating to nesting birds if they disturb them.

Rural crime officer PC Claire Salmon said: “Many people are unaware that disturbing a nest which is being built or being used by birds is in fact an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.

“I would advise anyone thinking of starting any gardening or building work during this time to check for birds’ nests that are in use (this is defined as when birds starts building or occupying a nest) and wait until the fledglings (young birds) have left.

“If you’re unsure more information can be found on the RSPB website.”
