A literacy charity has issued an urgent call for people in the Daventry area to become a reading helper.
The charity Beanstalk has been approached by primary schools in the Daventry area and is now looking for 15 volunteers to come forward and help a child learn to read.
Each Beanstalk reading helper works with three children and sees each child for two 30 minute sessions a week, during term-time, for three terms.
Greg Yarnall, area manager for Beanstalk in the East Midlands said: “The New Year is here and this is an excellent time for people to start a new, exciting, challenge by becoming a Beanstalk reading helper.
“Our volunteering programme allows you to have a direct impact on changing the life of a child. With more than 1,000 children still leaving primary school unable to read well, you can help give them the skills they need to succeed in life.
“We’d encourage everyone to contact us directly if they would like to give a child the gift of reading.” To find out more, or to become a Beanstalk reading helper, call Beanstalk on 01604 720969. Alternatively people can email Northamptonshire@beanstalkcharity.org.uk.
