Dave Grannan, CEO and co-founder of the Light L16 camera said: “What we found is that the point to shoot camera died and people started using cellphones, but people still bought big DSLRs.

“What we found in our market research is that half of all people who have ever bought a big DSLR don’t use it anymore.

“They bought it when they got married, had a kid, went on a big trip, but you ask them why and they say they’re took big and too inconvenient to take with them.

“They don’t use it not because they don’t like great photos, they do but it’s just too much hassle.

“If you want to climb a mountain and have the choice to take a big camera or a bottle of water with you, what are you going to take? This camera means you can do both.”

The camera looks very similar to a smartphone and the method for taking pictures is almost identical, including the pinch to zoom feature.

It can also shoot 4K video and is available for 1299 US dollars - a snip at the #6000 it costs for a full camera kit.

Dr Rajiv Laroia, CEO and co-founder said: “The system will enable people to easily carry a small, single device that offers true optical zoom with no protruding elements (we are currently prototyping 35mm-150mm), capture low-noise images even in low-light situations, and control depth-of-field and focus as part of the editing process.

“The average smartphone currently offers only digital zoom, producing noisy images when zoomed in.

“Additionally, the low-light performance and focus/depth-of-field control leave something to be desired on most smartphones.

“For people interested in better pictures, being able to zoom without pixelation and produce images with shallow depth of field is a must.

“We know that people have come to appreciate the usability of mobile photography experiences. We intend to couple the power of our system with the approachability of mobile photography, for those who prefer it.”

Anyone placing orders now is promised delivery by summer 2016.

Light has reportedly signed a licensing and investment deal with Foxconn, the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer that plays a huge role in Apple’s manufacturing.

Rajiv added: “Light cameras will put an end to the ‘good enough’ photos being produced by most smartphones today.

“We don’t think people should trust their memories to be ‘good enough.’”
