Trucker, 67, seriously injured in pile-up which blocked M1 near Northampton on Monday

A 67-year-old trucker is in hospital with serious injuries after a crash which closed part of the M1 near Northampton for more than three hours on Monday.

Police revealed the man was driving a Volvo HGV which was in collision with another truck and a van on a second of smart motorway near Crick.

He was treated by paramedics flown in by the local Air Ambulance service and air-lifted to the major trauma unit at Coventry following the smash at around 1.50pm.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police said: "A white Volvo HGV, a red Mercedes HGV and a white Citroen Nemo van were all in collision about half-a-mile south of Junction 18 on the M1.

"The driver of the Volvo HGV, a 67-year-old man, was conveyed to University Hospital Coventry where he remains with serious injuries."

Northamptonshire's Serious Collision Investigation Unit are looking into the crash and are asking for anyone who witnessed the incident — particularly those who may have dashcam footage — to call the Drivewatch Hotline on 0800 174615 using incident number: 290 of 25/01/21.
