Tribute to founder of landscape firm

A well known Daventry man has died aged 75.

John Yates passed away on Thursday, September 5, aged 75. He was husband to Pauline, a father of six and grandfather of nine.

Mr Yates was born in Dodford in 1937 where he spent most of his childhood. Later in life he moved to Norton and finally to Daventry.

While attending Daventry Secondary Modern he helped out at a local farm. He did an apprenticeship in engineering, then went on to do national service.

After that in the late 1950s Mr Yates went to work at Westbourne Engineering, later known as Daventry Engineering. In 1975 he worked for a short time at the Ryton car assembly plant, he was then made redundant. It was then he set up his own business JW Yates Landscapes, retiring in 2000.

For the last 20 years he enjoyed attending the East Northants Landrover Club where he took part in numerous competitions and events. He won many cups and trophies within this time, including third place at the nationals. His last victory was a few months before his death.
