Nobody was injured in the smash but all three lanes were blocked leaving some motorists stranded in queues stretching back to Milton Keynes for up to two hours.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police said: “We received a call at 10.30am on the M1 northbound between junction 15 and 15a, and involved four lorries and a car.

"Thankfully there were no injuries but fire crews from The Mounts and Mereway remained on scene to check a substance that had leaked from one of the lorries.

"It was deemed it non-corrosive and the road was reopened just after 1pm."
