A motorist had a lucky escape after a two-car smash which blocked a stretch of the M1 in Northamptonshire for around 90 minutes late last night (Thursday June 11).

Highways England halted traffic between Watford Gap services and the M45 turn off at Junction 17 while they cleared wreckage from the northbound carriageway.

Traffic cameras showed the extent of the damage to one vehicle, a Seat Ibiza, which came to rest in the middle lane. Yet, astonishingly, nobody was injured.

A spokesman for Highways England said: "The incident was reported at 11.08pm last night and involved two vehicles.

"Officers who arrived at the scene closed all three lanes while the incident was dealt with and the vehicles removed. The carriageway was closed for approximately 1hr 25mins but because of the time, the impact on traffic was relatively light."
