A broken down truck is causing severe tailbacks for drivers on a stretch of the M1 through Northamptonshire on Friday lunchtime.

One lane is blocked and on the southbound side between Junction 17 and Junction 16 Highways England are warning it could take until 1.30pm to clear queues.

Drivers are being advised to allow an extra 15 minutes to get through the stretch to Northampton.

There is more trouble ahead of drivers heading north out of Northamptonshire with a crash blocking two lanes between Junction 20 and Junction 21 near Lutterworth.

A Highways England spokesman said: "Crews are working to clear the scene but there are long delays approaching the incident and it is taking drivers approximately 45 minutes longer than normal to get through.

"Please consider alternative routes and allow additional time for your journey."
