Teenagers brighten up old concrete bus stops in Daventry

Brighter Daventry is a group of 15 and 16 year olds from the town who have been taking part in the National Citizen Service.

As part of their course they spoke to local people and decided to brighten up two bus shelters in the town.

They pitched their idea to Daventry District Council and got permission to carry out the works, and then held a fundraising car wash to get the money for their project.

The council also provided equipment and advice to ensure the work was carried out safely.

Having raised the money, the team undertook the work on concrete bus shelters in Braunston Road and Admirals Way on Thursday and Friday last week.

Leah Hollely, 16, said: “The project is all about brightening up our local community and we thought that bus shelters would be the perfect place to paint as they’re well used by lots of people.

“We chose bright colours for our design to express positivity and we’re really pleased with the result.”

Team leader Nicol Jalowiecka, 16, said: “We wanted to take on a project that would make the community happy and after speaking to people in the town they said that making the bus shelters brighter would do that. We are planning a really bright design with blue skies,

Cllr Alan Hills, portfolio holder for community, culture and leisure at Daventry District Council, said: “It’s great to see young people working so hard to put something back into our community. We’re very pleased to be working with Brighter Daventry on this project and I look forward to seeing the end result.”
