Teacher jailed for sex assault on girl

A former primary school teacher who sexually assaulted a young girl has been jailed for five-and-a-half years.

Kevin Marriott, from The Fairway in Daventry, was charged after the girl told her mother about the assault.

For legal reasons, the details of the incident cannot be reported.

Marriott was found guilty by a jury after he denied the allegation and was sentenced at Northampton Crown Court on Monday.

Speaking at the sentencing hearing, Judge Timothy Smith said: “Your actions had a severe impact on the victim’s family: her own father cannot play with her in the same way for fear of reminding her in any way of her ordeal.

“This will cause, for the victim, a scar that she could bear for the rest of her life.”

Marriott was sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison and has also been banned from working with children in future.

Following the sentencing, DC Spencer Bailey, of the Northamptonshire Police’s Child Protection Team, said: “Kevin Marriott’s actions have shattered the life of a young girl and her family.

“They have been through the most difficult time and will continue to struggle to come to terms with what has happened while Marriott serves his time in prison.

“We are committed to tackling this type of crime and I urge anyone who has any concerns to contact police by calling 101.”

A spokesman for Northamptonshire County Council said: “Once allegations came to light the school employing Mr Marriott immediately suspended the individual in question and he now no longer works for the county council.

“Northamptonshire County Council takes its safeguarding responsibilities extremely seriously and is committed to making children in the county safer.”
