Summer of fun lined up for kids across the Daventry area

THERE is a wide range of new skills to be learned over the summer holidays with many different sporting and fun activities.

Football, rugby, cricket and tennis camps alongside circus and art and crafts workshops will be just a few of the events in a packed programme which starts next week.

The events have been organised by Daventry District Council (DDC) working with Daventry Active.

Discover if you can be the next Freddie Flintoff with a cricket camp from Monday to Friday July 29.

Scrum down and try out a rugby camp running between August 1 to 5 while kick off and receive expert guidance from the coaches of Northampton Town Football Club with a football camp from August 8 to 12. They all take place at Daventry Sports Park in Browns Road.

New balls will be needed at a tennis camp from August 15 to 19 or slam dunk the opposition at a basketball camp between August 22 to 26.

Become a star on the dance floor with two weeks of dance camps at the leisure centre. They run from August 15 to 19 and August 29 to September 2.

With the onset of the London Olympics next year, there is a chance to turn your hand to something unusual. You can try fencing from August 2 to 4, boxing from August 8 to 10 or table tennis on August 22 and 23.

If you want to become a clown, you can try plate spinning, juggling and stilt walking as a circus skills workshop comes to the town. It takes place on August 1 and 2, August 15 and 16 and August 22 and 23. Or get creative with an arts and crafts sessions between August 10 and 12. All of these events are at Daventry Leisure Centre in Lodge Road.

In addition, the council’s play rangers will be out in force with a host of fun for young people in the villages.

On July 28, August, 4, 18, 25 and September 1, they will be at Byfield and Flore. The rangers visit Crick and Lilbourne on August 16, 23 and 30 and Kilsby and Braunston on August 19, 26 and September 2. On August 22 and 29, they visit Long Buckby and Weedon.

DDC’s portfolio holder for community, culture and leisure, Cllr Alan Hills said: “The council and Daventry Active Limited will be working with partners to deliver a huge range of summer activities for youngsters over the school holiday including activity camps in football, athletics, cricket, rugby, basketball, and fencing.

“We are providing our young people with a very comprehensive programme.”
