SEVERE WEATHER WARNING: Flooding causing travel chaos in Northamptonshire after a night of torrential rain

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning of heavy rain for today until 3pm as the wet and windy conditions are due to continue.

Traffic on Talavera Way between the Billing junction and the Round Spinney roundabout is “just passable” due to flood water, BBC Travel says.

One lane of the A43 between Towcester and Northampton is closed due to flooding and this is causing long delays.

One lane of the M1 southbound has been closed at junction 15 due to an accident.

Banbury Lane is also blocked between Pattishall and Rothersthorpe due to standing water.

It has been announced that Campion School in Bugbrooke is closing at 1pm due to the flooding on the roads near the school.

Homes in the village of Yelvertoft have suffered flood damage and schoolchildren have been taken home via boat.

High Street South in Tiffield is blocked at the St Johns Road junction and Tiffield Church of England School is closed today due to the flooding.

Reader Linda Pratt said: “Try to avoid Moulton village and roads surrounding, all flooded with standing water getting hard to pass other cars.”

Elsewhere people travelling on the A5 in either direction are being warned of flooding patches - and those exiting the M1 southbound at junction 16 should exercise caution as the slip road is flooded, but passable.

The village of Charwelton south of Daventry is experiencing severe flooding.

London Midland has also reported delays on the West Coast Mainline between Northampton and Rugby.

Several major roads around the Daventry area have been hit this morning.

The A361 to Banbury is flooded at Charwelton, where residents have been out trying to help traffic through the water in an attempt to keep the road open.

At Crick a dual carriageway has been flooded leading up to the junction 18 roundabout of the M1.

Yelvertoft High Street has become completely cut off due to rising water levels.

The A425 between Staverton and Leamington has also been closed by Warwickshire Police due to flooding at Lower Shuckburgh.

In Welton the main road has been flooded, causing problems for vehicles travelling from Daventry out to the Watford A5 crossroads.

There has also been reports of flooding on several footpaths around the Middlemore and Lang Farm areas of Daventry.

The heavy rain has also lead to today’s Woodford Halse School Cross Country event being cancelled due to the course being waterlogged.

The A5 between Weedon (the A45) and Kilsby (with the A361) has been hit by flooding in both directions say Highways England.

The same stretch of the road has been closed in both directions due to a collision shortly after 10am - it is not yet known if this is related to the flood problems. It is understood the collision occurred between the Watford and Long Buckby crossroads.

The A45 Daventry bypass Stefen Way has seen flooding this morning as well close to the roundabout for Leamington Way.

The water has apparently also carried oil or petrol onto the carriageway.

The A428 at West Haddon has also been hit by standing waterwith drivers taking care to try and keep the road open.

Residents in Clay Coton have been warned to expect flooding after a red alert was issued for the Clay Coton Brook.

Red alerts mean flooding is expected, and people need to take immediate action.

Red alerts have also been issued for Cogenhoe, Clipston and the River great Ouse in Brackley.

Elsewhere the county’s 4x4 rescue service - Northants 4x4 Response - has been put on standby. The charity provides support to all the emergency services in the county by providing them with safer ways to reach areas that might otherwise be cut off.
