A village pub, saved by the tireless efforts of the community, has reopened its doors after nearly two years.

The Fox and Hounds in Charwelton re-opened for business on Friday last week after an 18-month campaign to buy the pub and refurbish it.

There were more than 100 people who attended the opening night.

Daniel Elkins, one of those involved in the Charwelton Community Pub and Shop Co-operative, said: “We were really pleased with the open event on Friday. It was absolutely rammed with people from 5.30pm to closing time.

“We had a pre-launch on Thursday last week to say thank you to all of the people who have been involved in this project.

“I think there is a real sense of pride at what we have all managed to achieve. When you start something like this, you hope people will get involved. Forty per cent of people in the village have financially contributed and the rest have all volunteered their time.

“I think it is very important for the village to have the pub re-opening. It will give everyone in the village a real sense of community and there are already discussions about what is going to be the next neighbourhood project. It is nice that we have somewhere in the village for people to meet.”

The Charwelton Community Pub and Shop Co-operative hope to re-open the restaurant before the end of March.

People who wish to buy shares in the pub still can. For further details about the initiative and to purchase them visit
