AN AGREEMENT between regional police forces to tackle serious crime has been signed.

Northamptonshire Police has agreed with forces from Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, and Nottinghamshire to work together in some areas.

The deal will see the combining of the forces’ special branches and the East Midlands Counter Terrorism Intelligence Unit, the creation of a major crime unit and the expansion of the East Midlands Special Operations Unit.

Deirdre Newham is chairman of the Northamptonshire Police Authority, chairman of the East Midlands Police Authorities’ Joint Committee and joint chair of the Collaboration Board. She said: “The economic climate is changing dramatically and will significantly affect how the police service operates as a whole.

“Collaboration presents a real opportunity to reshape our business in a way that will enable us to deliver the best possible police service while makings savings.”
