Red Dwarf star Chris Barrie was on hand to officially open Kuni’s Coffee and Comics on Thursday last week.
Hundreds of people turned out to the launch of the coffee shop in Bowen Square run by Bryan Cooney. They were also joined by Star Wars characters for the opening.
Chris Barrie, who plays Rimmer in the hit science-fiction comedy series, was on hand to sign authographs from a queue of waiting fans.
Speaking to the Daventry Express, the 53-year-old said: “I think the shop is extremely impressive. And what I think it does is put our love for coffee into a very different environment.”
He also has a lot of fond memories of working on the show.
Chris said: “It is hard to pick one favourite moment across the 10 series that we have done, as we are now working on series 11. But Dimension Jump in the fourth series is always a favourite,
“There were a lot of people who worked very hard at BBC Manchester to get it on the screen.
“BBC in London was not interested in the idea at all but Rob Grant, Doug Naylor and Paul Jackson pushed very hard and the rest, as they say, is history.”
Other celebrities who could be spotted in town last week, included Hannah Spearritt of S Club 7 and Primeval fame, and Kai Owen, who plays Rhys in Torchwood. They both attended a special opening party at the shop last Wednesday night.
Bryan Cooney said: “The reaction from people to the first few days has been fantastic and we have had a lot of very good feedback.
“The trade has exceeded our expectations and been very steady over the first few days.
“We were all really happy with the opening. I know that Chris was really impressed with the shop.
“It helped to create a real buzz around the town as well.”
He also stated there will be further celebrity signings in the new year.
