A group of villagers has made a desperate appeal to the community to help keep the local pub open.

Residents in Charwelton are appealing for funds from people in neighbouring villages in a bid to re-open The Fox and Hounds which was closed in December last year.

The villagers attempted to buy the pub from Enterprise Inns but were unsuccessful in raising enough money before it was put up for auction.

It was later bought by a developer looking to turn the pub into social housing, however villagers have been given another chance to raise the money.

Daniel Elkins, chairman of the Charwelton parish meeting and one of the people behind the plan, said: “We have been given six weeks to raise the funds required.

“We already have £86,750 and we are confident that we can get a mortgage of £114,000 which leaves us needing around £60,250. Our goal is £261,000.

“We are appealing for people of the neighbouring villages to come forward and help our plight. People from Byfield, Woodford Halse, Preston Capes need to come forward and help us.”

He also believes there is a real appetite in the village to save the pub.

Mr Elkins added: “We have had a meeting recently and all of the villagers have expressed an interest in keeping the pub open.

“We are looking to have the pub open, but also a community shop and a different kind of restaurant, something very different from what is currently around.

“We have these very strong ideas and we know of community pubs which have been opened in Oxfordshire and are very successful.

“There is not a great tradition of trying to do it in Northamptonshire but we believe that we can raise the money and keep the pub open.”

He also hopes that if they do raise the funds, it can become a prototype for other communites looking to save their pub.

Mr Elkins said: “We have had a lot of difficulty trying to get this project off the ground.

“But if we are successful in reopening the pub, then hopefully if there are other communities out plannning to try and save their pub, they will be able to come to us for help and advice.”
