Here’s a photo from 1975 from the Daventry Express archives.
These are some of the pupils from Badby School getting ready to celebrate May Day in the traditional style.
They are all from the first year juniors at the school, and they donned morris dancing clothes to learn the steps ahead of a performance planned for later in the month in the village.
As well as the dancing, the school’s headteacher Mr Norman Lucas was planning on getting the children in trim for Maypole dancing.
The event would also include the crowning of the village’s May Queen.
Similar festivities went on in many of the villages, and Daventry as well with its traditional May ceremonies.
Many villages continue with the tradition of Maypole dancing, and crowning a king and queen.
Daventry’s event however has not stood the test of time.
