The new conservation area covers the High Street, Church Lane West End and Hall Lane as well as medieval settlement earthworks to the west of the village and ridge and furrow earthworks to the east.

A number of individual buildings have been ‘locally listed’ – including Welford House and the war memorial – and there are proposals to put in place an Article 4 direction to protect historic features on a range of properties in the village.

An appraisal and management plan for the new conservation area has also been adopted as a supplementary planning document, meaning it will be used to help determine planning decisions in Welford in future.

The measures were agreed by Daventry District Council on July 23, following a public consultation which was held in February.

It is part of a wider review of the District’s conservation areas, which put in place tighter planning controls for anyone seeking permission to alter or demolish a building, or carry out work to trees, in order to maintain the special interest of the area.
