North Northamptonshire Council returning officer Rob Bridge said: “As we edge closer to polling day, I would like to urge all residents to register to vote allowing you to have your say in an extremely significant election, an election that marks the beginning of a new era for the area and one which will map out of the future of North Northamptonshire and your new council.

“Residents still have time to register to vote, and to register for a postal or proxy vote. Please don’t miss your chance to have your say.

“Remember, if you’re currently registered with the former districts, you don’t need to re-register.

"It is only those who are not currently registered or who have recently moved to a new house, who will need to re-register.”

The two new unitary authorities of North and West Northamptonshire councils launched on April 1, heralding a fresh start for local government in the county.

On May 6, elections will be held for the 78 seats that make up the new North Northamptonshire Council.

The authority has taken over all the responsibilities of Corby borough, East Northamptonshire, Kettering borough and Wellingborough borough councils as well as Northamptonshire County Council.

There will be 93 seats up for election to the West Northamptonshire Council which took over the responsibilities of Northampton borough, South Northamptonshire and Daventry district councils.

There will also be neighbourhood planning referendums held in Ecton and Gretton.

Residents can also check whether if they are already registered or register by calling their local elections office.
