Police told the driver of this van he had a very lucky escape after smashing a van into a tree on Sunday morning.

Officers found Volkswagen Caddyvan in a ditch next to the A361 road south of Daventry between Charwelton and Byfield.

PC Scott Kimberley, from Northamptonshire Police Safer Roads Team, admitted: "It looks like someone is very lucky there isn't serious injuries.

"The rear of the van was the part that collided with the tree rather than the front — otherwise it would have been a completely different outcome that would have left a family in bits.

"Please slow down and drive to the conditions."
