Local people and businesses are being encouraged to show their creative side by entering two competitions ahead of this summer’s three-week long Daventry Arts Festival.
Organised by Daventry and District Housing (DDH), in partnership with a range of local organisations, the fifth annual Daventry Arts Festival starts on Saturday July 4 and will feature a variety of arts and craft themed activities.
The popular photography competition is back and this year’s festival will also attempt to uncover Daventry’s literary talents in the form of a poetry competition.
Sarah Sims, community development officer at DDH, said: “The Arts Festival remains popular with the people of Daventry and these competitions mean that we will be able to celebrate even more local talent.
“Hopefully, having the opportunity to showcase their work will capture the imagination of the community.
“We know that there is a thriving local amateur photography scene and I’m sure that there are plenty of passionate poets out there as well.”
The photography competition, themed ‘Daventry through a lens’ is split into three different age categories; under 11, 11 to 18-years-old and over 18. There is also a Community Choice award that is decided by a public vote.
The poetry competition features the same four categories and entrants can choose or combine from the following four themes; friendship, memories, summer and community. The Daventry Express is supporting both competitions and each of the winning entries will be published in the newspaper.
The entry deadline for both competitions is June 19. Entries will be judged and displayed during the three-week festival. The best poems received will be showcased at the Daventry District Council offices while the photographs will be exhibited at Daventry Library.
To enter either competition please send your poem or a copy of your photograph, as well as your name, age and contact details via email to firstname.lastname@example.org; submit it in person at the DDH Offices on Sopwith Way or at the Daventry Town Council offices on New Street in Daventry; or by post to Daventry & District Housing, Nene House, Sopwith Way, Daventry, NN11 8PB.
While the final line-up for the three-week festival is still to be confirmed, popular events returning this summer include Strictly Daventry, the Summer Samba and succession of arts and craft workshops.
