Your votes have been counted and the Gusher is pleased to announce the Pike & Eel pub has scooped first place in our Best Bar 2014 competition.

We asked our readers to pick their favourite place in Daventry for a perfectly pulled pint and a bar or pub which pulls out the stops to provide great service, food or drinks to their local community.

This year your choice was the Pike & Eel, which first opened on the Grange estate in 1974.

Chasers Bar & Lounge on New Street and Friday’s on High Street came joint-second.

The Pike and Eel, which employs three members of staff, has been run by Beverly Martin, 49, for the past three years, during which it has become a focus for charitable and community events, as well as supporting residents with refreshments during a number of clean up events run by Cllr Wendy Randall.

Mrs Martin said she was “overwhelmed” to have won, and was delighted to have the support of local residents.

She said: “I would like to say thanks so, so much to all the people who voted for us and helped make the Pike & Eel a success, especially Jacquie and Andrew Ward. It means so much to me.

“I have worked on and off in the Pike & Eel for 19 years and this pub has always been my passion.

“Even my husband knows he sometimes has to come second!

“Over the past three years this pub has really grown to feel like a community, and we have done a lot of charity work.

“If people get in touch with us, we usually work to raise money for good causes.”

Mrs Martin said she had ambitious plans for the year ahead, including introducing real ale. There will also be a party celebrating the accolade on Saturday, January 10 from 12.45pm.
