The village of Pitsford, near Northampton, was officially one of the two hottest places in the UK on Monday (July 18) — but experts expect the county’s new temperature record of 38.2°C to be broken today … the UK has already seen 40°C for the first time EVER at Heathrow Airport … trains have been cancelled and people are being told to stay safe in “exceptional temperatures.” Refresh regularly and scroll down for the latest news…

Town councillors in Raunds are opening Saxon Hall as refuge from the heat

They say the hall will be open until 7.30pm tonight and from 9am tomorrow for “anyone who needs a cold glass of water or an air conditioned room.”

North Northamptonshire waste tips at Corby and Wellingborough have now CLOSED — as have those in West Northamptonshire

Those sites due to open on Tuesday will do so — but could be closed at short notice.

Two of the areas busiest pubs have closed their kitchens for two days

The Sun, Hardingstone, and Brampton Halt — both part of the McManus Pubs chain — both say they don’t want kitchen staff working in extreme heat.

A statement on The Sun’s Facebook page said: “In light of recent government guidance and being responsible employers, we feel its not the right thing to ask our chefs to run kitchens as normal.

“Kitchen temperatures will run hotter then forecasted temperatures, therefore for the health and well-being for our chefs we shall be closing our kitchens.

“We will be open from 12pm until late for lots of refreshing drinks however out in our summer garden.”

Waste tips in Corby, Wellingborough could have to close at short notice for health and safety reasons.

North Northamptonshire Council is advising residents to only visit the household waste recycling centre sites if it is absolutely necessary to do so today and tomorrow.

Kingsthorpe College in Northampton is also closed to most students today and tomorrow

Headteacher Jennifer Giovanelli told parents: “Having looked at national advice and after undertaking a thorough risk assemssment of our building and children's travel to and from school we have come to the difficult decision to move to remote learning on both Monday and Tuesday.

“The school will open with a skeleton staff.

“The heat is expected to drop significantly on Tuesday night into Wednesday and school will be open as normal from Wednesday, although uniform will continue to be relaxed and students will not be expected to wear a tie or blazer.”

Southfield school in Kettering is open to children of key workers ONLY today and tomorrow.

Executive headteacher Steph Roberts‘ letter to parents: “Our intention was to remain open as usual. However, having considered subsequent advice and having made an assessment of our teaching and communal spaces (plus travel considerations), we are unable to ensure the safety of all our students and staff.

“Therefore, we have come to the difficult decision to move to remote learning on both Monday 18 and Tuesday 19July 2022. The school will, however, be open with a reduced staff for children of key workers, vulnerable children and those without access to IT.

“We look forward to welcoming all students back to school on Wednesday. We appreciate that this is not the ideal way to end the school year but we must respond to the national health and safety concerns now in place for the region as they relate to our site specific context. “ Full story here ...
