A young boy who has already made ten scrub bags is one of the youngest volunteers taking part in a Northamptonshire wide campaign.

Elliott Godfrey and his mum saw an article about Health Watch Northamptonshire asking for people to make drawstring bags for hospital workers to put their uniforms during the pandemic.

The 12-year-old from Daventry instantly wanted to get involved so researched how to make the bags, raided his mum’s fabric stash and got to work.

Diane Godfrey, Elliott’s mum, said: “We’ve got more spare time on our hands and Elliott was really keen to have a go.

“He had a little bit of guidance from me about how to cut the fabric but that was it.

“Elliott liked the idea they were all made out of recycled things. He has used duvet covers.

“His auntie is also a nurse and she has been working on a Covid ward and he is aware through the news what is going on.”

Since Elliott started sewing two weeks ago, he has made ten scrub bags that are used for NHS staff to put their work clothes in and then put straight in the washing machine, to help stop the spread of the virus.

Diane added: “It’s interesting for Elliott to read and understand that these bags can help control the spread of the virus.

“It makes me feel really proud. A lot of people think sewing is a girly thing to do, so I feel proud that it is something he was keen to get involved in.

“I think it helps that I have a beast of a machine that goes fast and makes a lot of noise.”

As half term approaches, Diane says Elliott and herself are hoping to sew even more bags as well as masks ear-saver hair bands and scrub caps.
