A NEW vicar is set to start on Thursday for three villages.
The Rev Canon John Knight will be officially welcomed and installed as priest in charge (house for duty) of the benefice of Weedon Bec, with Everdon and Dodford by The Rt Revd John Holbrook, Bishop of Brixworth and the Venerable Christine Allsopp Archdeacon of Northampton.
In an introduction to his parishioners Canon Knight said: “I come among you, with some excitement let it be said, as the new priest for Weedon, Everdon and Dodford, and look forward to getting to know something of the villages and their communities in the coming months.
“We hope that many of you will take part in some of the exciting events leading up to Christmas – including the carol services 9.30am on December 11 at Weedon, December 18 6pm with Daventry Brass at Dodford, the ever popular Christingle services Christmas Eve 3.30pm at Weedon, 5.30pm at Everdon, 11pm midnight service on Christmas Eve at Everdon and 9.30am at Weedon on Christmas morning.
“The first 50 years of my life were spent in Zimbabwe – previously known as Southern Rhodesia. I went to school in South Africa, and then university and theological college in England.
“I then returned to my homeland and served the first 25 years of my ministry there, finally as dean of Mutare Cathedral for the final ten years before being forced to leave my homeland by the Mugabe regime.
“The rest of my ministry has been in the Peterborough Diocese. Because I retired a few years ago, I come as what is technically termed a ‘House for Duty’’ priest. I will continue to live in my retirement home in Brackley, and commute to work.
“Although I will normally be available on Sundays and two days of the week – that will inevitably be somewhat flexible, and as far as possible I will be available for special needs or events. If you need to speak to me, please phone 01280 706258 and leave a message.”
