A COUPLE who dedicated 30 years of their lives to charity fundraising have received a national award.
Peter and Muriel Farley, from Barby, were named Cancer Research UK Honorary Fellows in celebration of their “unflinching loyalty and dedication” shown to the cause over many years.
They were also presented with long service awards.
An audience at the Hotel Russell in Russell Square heard how Peter and Muriel Farley were founder members the Barby Local Committee, which formed in 1981. The committee has raised to date £276,000.
Mrs Farley said: “Peter and I were thrilled, amazed and totally shocked to receive this award.
“Every moment of our fundraising years has been a joy, which culminated in the award ceremony where we received outstanding hospitality from Cancer Research UK and fellow fundraisers. The day was one that Peter and I will never forget”
Despite both being well into their 80s, Peter and Muriel continue to raise funds for the charity with regular coffee mornings, selling local crafts and empting collecting boxes.
Previously as a committee, they regularly raised over £7,000 a year through events and In Memoriam donations, as well as encouraging the village community to hold collecting boxes in their businesses and homes.
In 2010/11 the couple set the goal of raising more than £1,000 through coffee mornings and other events. They reached this goal in December, 2010.
