Long delays following smash on M1 southbound in Northamptonshire

Highways England advise drivers "avoid this route if possible"

Drivers on the M1 are being warned to expect long delays heading southbound through Northamptonshire.

Highways England reporting four-mile tailbacks are adding around 45-minute to journey-times following a smash near Watford Gap services at around 7am.

A spokesman said: "Traffic is currently being held southbound between Junction 17 where the the M45 joins the M1 and Junction 16 for the A45.

"TrafficOfficers are on scene, and recovery is en route but traffic is building in the area and we would advise drivers to please avoid this route if possible."

Traffic is likely to be heaver on the M1 through Northamptonshire as drivers attempt to avoid an earlier incident on the A14 near Kettering.
