Lending a hand to bird visitors

Special bird boxes for house martins are being put up at Woodford Halse Social Club.

Local birder Ian Dobson said: “The club has a small colony of these birds nesting on the building and they have favoured this traditional site for several decades.

“The club is having new windows and a paint job and we were concerned about the birds returning to nest from their African wintering grounds.

“The committee has decided to install some purpose built nest boxes for house martins and myself and a few other regulars have chipped in to purchase more.

“In total we have bought eight double boxes and these will be installed before the contractors scaffold is removed.”
