Large amount of household appliances and domestic waste dumped by Northamptonshire road

Rubbish dumped near Silverstone is being cleared by South Northamptonshire Council workers

A Northamptonshire council is hoping to prosecute the person responsible for a large amount of waste dumped in a lay-by on the A413 near Silverstone.

The mixture of general domestic waste, garden waste, household appliances and the remains of a garden shed weighed three quarters of a tonne.

Initial checks carried out by Environmental Enforcement Officers from South Northamptonshire Council uncovered material that may allow them to trace the person responsible for dumping the waste.

Councillor Dermot Bambridge, SNC’s portfolio holder for environmental services said: “If the evidence holds up we will not hesitate in using every resource at our disposal to recoup the Council’s costs and will push for a fine that will put out a clear message to others.

“We will not tolerate a flagrant disregard for the rules that are designed to protect our environment, to protect people from harm, and to protect our picturesque district.”

At Magistrates’ Court anyone found guilty of fly-tipping could face a fine of up to £50,000 and/or a 12 month prison sentence. If the case goes to a Crown court they face an unlimited fine and/or up to five years in prison.

It costs up to £100 per tonne to landfill waste, but SNC officers reduced the cost of removing the waste by separating it out. The garden waste was sent to be processed for compost, while the household appliances were taken to the Farthinghoe Recycling and Reuse Centre on the A422.
