Job fair highlighted possibilities in Daventry

Daventry & District Housing held a career and volunteering fair for local people searching for work or seeking to gain experience.

The event, which was supported by Access Training, Everyone Active, Northampton College and Daventry Volunteer Centre, was held in Daventry last week.

Taking place during National Apprenticeship Week, the fair showcased local job openings, signposted people to volunteering opportunities and provided information about apprenticeships, training and development and qualifications.

Jamie Over from Daventry was featured on leaflets and posters promoting the event.

Before he began volunteering Jamie took part in a Prince’s Trust project to help his confidence. In 2013 he started volunteering with DDH. He also attended various training courses and worked to improve his self-esteem and confidence.

He currently looking for employment after completion of a 12 month placement.

Another individual that has benefited from DDH’s volunteering programme is 53-year-old John Stephenson from Northampton who took up volunteering two years ago after being faced with redundancy.

After searching for suitable volunteer roles that could best utilise his skills, John became an IT champion at DDH’s Chappell House sheltered scheme in Moulton.

John said: “Being involved with people boosted my self esteem which enabled me to apply for jobs with greater positivity and I started to get invited to interviews.

“I’m now a clerical officer at Kettering General Hospital. I’ve been in the job for just over a year, really enjoy the role and feel that I am making a positive contribution.

“I owe a huge debt of thanks to DDH for giving me the opportunity to rediscover my self confidence, and for providing me with additional skills that have made me more marketable in the workplace.”
